England at the World Cup!

The World Cup in Elancourt, France was a great event which saw some fantastic play over 2 days of intense competition. The English team were well represented with teams in the Open, Veterans, Under 12’s & Under 15’s, where the team achieved a best ever 3rd place result.

The Individuals proved to be a very competitive event with England Captain, Chris Thomas, getting the furthest in the Open reaching the last 16 before losing to the eventual Champion, Rémy Huynh of Belgium. Unfortunately no Veterans made it out of their groups despite some good performances. The Under 12’s saw some competition debutants who all played well but the more experienced Conor Atkin made the Barrage round before losing in sudden death extra time in his tie. The Under 15’s was always going to be really tough as Joe Kinrade made the last 16 before bowing out to Louison Giaux of Belgium.

The team event had some unlucky draws for the English teams in the Open and Veterans as both teams failed to get out of the group stage. The Under 12’s managed a great 2-2 draw with France but in the end came 5th in the junior group. It was the Under 15’s who surpassed expectations with a great 3rd place finish. After a battling display against the Italians and a close game with the Belgians, the team grabbed a last minute win against Austria to gain their best World Cup finish meaning England have now medalled 8 times in the last 6 World Cups across U15, U19 & U12 levels.

A great event and England look forward to Gibraltar in 2018!
